RAVEN ARBUCKLE, FOLK HORROR FINE ARTIST AND ILLUSTRATOR

Statement

My name is Raven Arbuckle, professional artist and illustrator, (*cough*&writer), with a BFA in Illustration from RMCAD, and a current anthropology student planning to focus on religion, body modification, and unusual human culture and phenonmenon.

I'm a folk horror artist whose work delves into the realms of occultism, mythology, and the human animal, exploring themes of death, rebirth, ritual, sexuality, and the taboo. Their art seeks to restructure how we engage with our deepest fears, finding beauty in suffering, and fostering growth by traversing the dark, liminal spaces of the psyche. With a focus on transforming the human body and the creation of personal mythology, my goal is for my work challenges conventional boundaries, aiming to explore counterculture through mythologies rooted in spiritual and occult practices.

I have a sassy medium haired torty cat named Xena (Warrior Princess Stinky baby), 26 siblings, and the heart of a roughly 36 year old man in my bedroom. I am a Jack of All Trades, but more importantly I am a dedicated unholy attendant to my muse.

“Up and coming artist Raven Arbuckle, has sparked a lot of anticipation, such as her show piece Desert Dreaming. The work is “gothic and mythical, and I think she’s just incredible,” says Farah.” - Native Art magazine Fall 2020

Bio

From a young age Raven showed a deep interest in art, quickly moving from fingerpainting in her favorite Jurassic park t-shirt to attempting to copy illustrations of mythical creatures in crayon, to studying her fathers Boris Vallejo art books and delving into his extensive library. Growing up in feral, desolate deserts, where the dynamic and sometimes violent cycles of life and death were on full display, an interest in the darker side of life was sparked. Eventually her family settled in a small canyon in the foothills of the Sacramento mountains, overlooking the white sands and the Tularosa Basin. It was here that she was able to indulge her curiosity, all at once isolated and freed by her rural enviroment. When she wasn’t catching snakes and spiders, or collecting and cleaning various animal bones, she could always be found tucked away in a sketchbook, where she was able to develop and explore a rich internal world.

After an apprenticeship under Joshua Marchand at Third Alliance Tattoo Studio, Arbuckle decided to pursue a BFA degree at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design. During that time she starting working with FaraHNHeight Fine Art Gallery in Santa Fe, and since then has shown work in Taos, Florida, Colorado and California. Raven is currently pursuing a degree in Cultural Anthropology, with a  focus on mythology and religion while continuing to work full time as an illustrator and fine artist in various mediums.
